INTERPOL meeting in Buenos Aires aims to create regional taskforce against human trafficking
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – INTERPOL’s Regional Bureau for South America has held the organization’s first meeting of specialized liaison officers involved in the fight against human trafficking.
A key objective of the meeting was to create a South American taskforce that will operate as an information exchange forum for law enforcement agencies. The taskforce will set the guidelines for a regional operation in the first half of 2012 aimed at searching for and locating women and children who are victims of human trafficking.
Delegates from police forces and prosecutor offices of eight South American countries (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, and Uruguay), as well as from Spain and INTERPOL’s San Salvador Regional Bureau attended the three-day meeting.
With senior officials who attended the opening ceremony including the Argentine Security Vice-Minister, Cristina Caamaño, Argentine Federal Police Deputy Chief Alejandro Di Nizo, the Executive Secretary of the Inter American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) of the Organization of American States (OAS), US Ambassador Paul Simons, and Regional Director Juan Artola of the International Organization for Migration, the meeting heard how one of the main aspects of INTERPOL international cooperation is the promotion and development of training and strategies aimed at enhancing the activities of police across different agencies.
